Frequently Asked
Questions

Environmental Protection

1

What is Plant Fiber Polymer Technology?

Plant Fiber Polymer (PFP), is globally patented technology from our head office Taiwan-PFTA.

We use renewable resources from plants as well as Plant Plus, agricultural waste for materials from sugarcane, coffee grounds, wheat straw, pineapple skin and more. These materials include plant glum and starch to create polymer pellets.

Unlike other similar products, which use oil-based materials and may contain ink, adhesive glue, or plasticizers, PFP is completely plant-based.

2

How PFP is Better for the Environment?

  1. We buy and repurpose agricultural waste from farmers to reduce carbon emissions due to burning crop waste, and to create value from it.
  2. As part of the PFP process, we successfully deployed and tested our composting system on the field (green bin service) to prepare turning compostable products waste into organic culture soil.
The entire PFP process reduces garbage waste in landfill and creates materials that help plants grow.
  3. The PFP process fulfills our mandate to protect the environment, promote the circular economy,
and achieve our goal of zero waste.

Carbon Emissions and Energy Usage
Plant Plus’ PFP production process produces less carbon emissions and uses less water than
petrochemical and paper products. We have numbers to prove it:

PFP Material Petro-chemical Paper
Energy Usage 58MJ used per kg 85 MJ used per kg PS, 80MJ used per kg PET/PP/PE 51.5 MJ used per kg produced
Carbon Emissions 1.8 kg CO2 emitted per kg 3 kg CO2 emitted per 1 kg PET 9.592 kg CO2 emitted per kg produced
Water Usage 50 kg water used per kg produced 150 kg water used per 1kg PS 300-400 kg water used per kg produced
3

What Do We Mean by Compostable and Biodegradable?

In summary, biodegradable means the materials breaks down quickly into anything, whereas compostable means the material must breakdown into only compounds that are safe for the environment.

Biodegradables are anything that undergoes degradation resulting from the action of naturally occurring microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae. In the past, biodegradable products used petrochemical products and biodegradable materials or additives to accelerate the degradation. This results in biodegradable materials breaking into finely divided plastic particles. Most of these additives are toxic plasticizers that harm the soil and water source if they enter the food chain. Therefore, biodegradable products may not be safe for the environment and may cause harm to the environment.

Compostable means that a product is capable of breaking down into natural elements in a compost environment. Compostable materials breaks down into CO2, water, inorganic compounds and biomass and leaves no toxic residue, which causes no harm to the environment.

This is why unlike some biodegradable materials, compostable materials are actually great for the soil, and create a better and healthier environment for the planet!

4

How Long Does Plant Plus Straws Take to Decompose?

Composting may take anywhere from 45 to 60 days to complete decomposition. In natural circumstances, decomposition may take longer, depending on the surrounding conditions.

5

What Happens if the Plant Plus Sugarcane Fiber Straws End Up in a Landfill?

Even if Plant Plus Sugarcane Straws end up in the landfill, it is still better than the other competing products.

When we put garbage into the trash can, the garbage ends up in the landfill but does not truly disappear from there. Contents inside the landfill will eventually dissolve, leaving streams of toxic chemicals (e.g. plastics) that will enter and pollute the soil or even penetrate into the groundwater system. Plant plus sugarcane fiber straws is better than plastic products because it does not dissolve into micro or nano plastic or other nasty toxic chemicals that will leak out of the landfill and pollute our environment. This is the beauty of using all natural plant based product.

6

What Makes Plant Straws Better?

We have already received tons of great feedback from restaurant owners.

When they serve drinks with paper straws, customers complain. They get soggy, break apart, and leave residue in drinks. Servers often have to provide a new paper straw to customers every 10 to 15 minutes. This is more costly for owners and just creates more unnecessary waste.

Plant Plus straws won’t fall apart, so you can enjoy your drinks with a wonderful experience as always, and safe for children to use without drinking any plasticizer.

The best part is that keep our drinking habits, minus the guilt of using plastic.

Also, we donate to and support to non-profit groups aimed at protecting the environment. When people use our straws, they are supporting the environment.

7

What Certification Does Plant Plus Have?

Plant Plus is plastic-free, food packaging safe, and ISO quality control certified.

Two non-profit group certifications from 1% to zero zero waste in Canada.

We have a $5-million product liability insurance.
